1. Gather all items to be removed from the rental unit
This step is a given, but make sure to check every nook and cranny of the rental. The last thing you want is to leave anything behind and get an unexpected charge. Make sure to leave anything that was there when you moved in, so they don’t fine you for taking items.
2. Sort and organize items into piles based on category (e.g., clothing, electronics, toys)
This is a great time to ensure you’re getting rid of things that are no longer useful. We want the unit to be as clear and clutter-free as possible, so it’s important we don’t just leave stuff everywhere! When you organize your items into categories, it will make the moving process much easier.
3. Remove any hazardous materials (e.g., paint, chemicals) or anything that can’t be donated

5. Clean the rental unit thoroughly before moving out of it
This includes dusting, vacuuming floors and carpets, mopping hardwood floors (if applicable), cleaning windowsills and light fixtures, and wiping down countertops and appliances with a damp cloth or sponge.
6. Return keys to the landlord’s agent along with a copy of your forwarding address so they know where you’ve gone
This is one of the most critical steps to take. If they don’t know where you’ve moved to, it can make them question if they should give your deposit back or not!
